In the heart of Malaysia’s running community, Azlihana binti Abdul Rahim, affectionately known as Hana, has become a beacon of inspiration and dedication. From the bustling streets of Ampang, Selangor, Hana has carved a niche for herself as a trail race director, orchestrating some of the most challenging and scenic races across Malaysia.
With 12 years under her belt, Hana’s portfolio boasts the management of prestigious events like the Deuter Trail Run, INOV8 Trail Run, Ultimate Direction Cross Country, Cameron Night Run, Cameron Ultra, and the Sundown Loop race, with the Cameron Ultra standing out as her largest event, drawing up to 3,000 participants.
Hana’s journey is not just about numbers; it’s a testament to her passion for trail running and her commitment to creating unforgettable experiences for the running community. One of her most memorable experiences unfolded during CULTRA 2019, a testament to her resilience and dedication.
“It was early morning when I stood at the race village, surrounded by eager runners buzzing with excitement and nerves. The trail ahead promised breathtaking views and gruelling terrain, but nothing could dampen the spirits of these determined athletes.
5 hours into the race, we were summoned by the tea plantation owner due to a report received from the authorities that there were illegal trespassers, suspected group of runner’s enthusiasts in the tea plantation before the race starts. From the beginning, we had signed an agreement with the rea plantation owner that we will refrain others that are non-participant to enter the restricted are of the plantation due to safety reason and to ensure safety of the plantation biodiversity. Ample warning messages were put up with additional resources were in place to deter such trespassers, nonetheless there were still adamant and persistent trespassers. We were only left with an option to omit the plantation route which defeats the purpose of the entire race theme due to these trespasser’s irresponsible behaviour. Negotiations went on for an hour and authorities warned the trespassers to not repeat the offence. Finally, we were given the greenlight to proceed with the race with an assurance that such trespassing incident shall not be repeated. Would have not wanted to imagine what could have happened if the authorities and tea plantation owner did not give us the greenlight to proceed. Regardless the number of meetings to prepare for CULTRA, its these ad-hoc last-minute moments that would always surprise me and challenge me as trail race director. Ever since this incident, we have amped up our security at the tea plantation area with additional information being circulated to participants on the do’s and don’ts and extra resources in the trail without fail.
At that moment, I realised the true essence of being a trail race director – not just orchestrating an event but fostering a sense of unity and resilience that transcends the boundaries of competition. It’s an experience I’ll never forget, and one that reaffirms my passion for the wild and untamed beauty of the trails.”
Her proudest moment came when her events gained international recognition, a nod to her meticulous planning, innovative ideas, and the unique experiences she offers to participants. Hana’s commitment to excellence is evident in her continuous pursuit of knowledge. By attending workshops and conferences, like the one held by UTMB in Thailand, she stays at the forefront of event management, trail running, and safety protocols, ensuring her races are not just events, but benchmarks in the running community.
Looking ahead, Hana is excited to introduce new categories, including a Senior Veteran category, and enhance the race experience with cash prizes for international and local winners, wave flag-offs, and exclusive vest jackets for participants covering distances from 14km to 100km.
