The Desaru Coast Multisport Festival presented by IRONMAN is marking its fifth edition this year, solidifying its status as one of Southeast Asia’s premier endurance sports events. Since its debut in 2022, the festival has grown significantly, and this year it expects to welcome more than 1,200 athletes from 60 countries to Johor’s award-winning coastal destination. Reflecting its growing regional prominence, international competitors will make up approximately 60 per cent of the field.

Anchored by the flagship IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast taking place on July 26, the festival provides racing opportunities for athletes at every stage of their development. The schedule includes the Olympic-distance 5150, the beginner-friendly Sprint, and the IRONKIDS races. Beyond the competition, organisers have introduced a vibrant lineup of lifestyle activities, including Beach Football, Neon Golf, a Durian Party, and fitness sessions to create an engaging weekend for families and spectators.

The event serves as a crucial pathway for triathlon participation in Malaysia, which remains the only country in Asia to host two IRONMAN 70.3 races. This fixture complements IRONMAN 70.3 Langkawi, allowing local athletes to gain valuable experience on home soil. Adding international stakes to the weekend, the Desaru Coast race will offer 50 qualifying slots for the 2027 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States.

Leading the strong local contingent is Teh Kuok Yuen, who etched his name into Malaysian endurance sports history in 2024 by becoming the nation’s first athlete to complete a full-distance IRONMAN in under nine hours. Teh clocked an impressive 8:56:42 at IRONMAN Copenhagen and was the fastest Malaysian finisher at the inaugural Desaru Coast event. The 39-year-old noted that the unique combination of heat, humidity, and rolling hills makes the course particularly special, adding that the resort-integrated setup makes race logistics highly manageable for athletes travelling with families.

Teh will be joined by seasoned campaigner Shahrom Abdullah, who was the fastest Malaysian male in 2024, and Yen Chia, who returns to lead the local women’s challenge after finishing as the fastest Malaysian female in last year’s edition.

The international field is equally competitive, headlined by returning champions Jed Radbone of Australia and Ling Er Choo of Singapore, who captured the men’s and women’s titles respectively last year. Veteran Australian triathlete Assad Attamimi is also expected to return to the starting line. Attamimi has podiumed in all three of his previous appearances at Desaru Coast and will be looking to capture the elusive title this year.

Competitors will face a demanding yet scenic course that begins with a sea swim, transitions into a rolling bike route, and concludes with a fully closed-road run through The Els Club before finishing at Riverside Desaru Coast. CG Lim, Senior Director of Operations for Asia, highlighted that the destination offers a perfect weekend getaway by combining a world-class integrated resort with stunning beaches.

The festival’s continued success is driven by the collaborative effort of more than 850 volunteers, event crew, and local stakeholders.
