KLSCM Named Official Preliminary Selection Event for 2027 SEA Games Marathon

In a major move to bolster national medal hopes on home soil, Malaysia Athletics announced today that the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) will serve as the official preliminary selection event for the 2027 SEA Games marathon squad.
The landmark decision was formalised this morning at Wisma OCM through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by Malaysia Athletics Deputy President Dato’ Wan Hisham Wan Salleh and Dirigo Events Director Rainer Biemans. The signing was witnessed by Olympic Council of Malaysia Chief Executive Officer Fong Wan Hor and National Sports Council Athlete Division Director Zaim Yusof.
The initiative marks a proactive, athlete-first strategy by the national governing body to provide Malaysian runners with clearer pathways and extended preparation time ahead of the 2027 regional showpiece, which Malaysia is set to host. By leveraging the country’s premier running event, Malaysia Athletics hopes to systematically evaluate top-tier local talent against a highly competitive international field.
“Malaysia has marathon talents that can be further nurtured and we are exploring structured and better-planned pathways to take them to the next level,” said Dato’ Wan Hisham. He noted that the partnership aims to uncover new prospects while supporting current athletes with established goals and year-round training. “We recognise their efforts, determination, and grit in their pursuit of excellence to date, and we hope to aid them further in their training all year round.”
Selecting KLSCM as the battleground is a natural fit. As the first and only road race in Malaysia to hold a World Athletics Elite Label, the event—scheduled for 3 and 4 October 2026—attracts over 40,000 participants from more than 70 countries, including elite SEA Games contenders from neighbouring nations competing for a MYR 500,000 prize purse.
For Dirigo Events, the rights holder and organiser of KLSCM, the partnership aligns seamlessly with their long-term vision of elevating distance running in the country. Biemans expressed immense pride in the selection, calling it a significant milestone for both their organisation and Malaysian athletics as a whole.
“We are excited to be able to work hand-in-hand with Malaysia Athletics to help the country stand tall as the proud host of the SEA Games in 2027,” Biemans explained. “This marks the first step in a long collaboration in building development and sustainability in the sport for the athletes and the industry.”
Beyond just serving as a qualifying race, the newly minted MOU outlines comprehensive, long-term support for aspiring national marathoners. The agreement includes provisions for a structured development programme, increased regional and international race exposure, and crucial access to sports science services and facilities under the National Sports Institute. The partnership will also explore collaborative coaching initiatives to ensure athletes are peaking at the right time.
Both Malaysia Athletics and Dirigo Events are slated to meet again in the coming weeks to finalise the operational specifics of the agreement, setting the stage for what promises to be a fiercely contested KLSCM this October.
