From Self-Doubt to Champion: Muhammad Faaiz’s Journey to Endurance Glory

When Muhammad Faaiz Danial Bin Zawari crossed the finish line of the Pacer Endurance Challenge 2025, completing 18 laps (a staggering 36km in 3 hours), few realised that his greatest competition was not the clock or the course—it was the battle within himself. His journey from tentative beginnings to becoming the 3-hour category Men’s Open Champion is a story of confronting self-doubt head-on and emerging stronger with every stride.
Faaiz’s story began in an unexpected way. “I started my running journey in 2021,” he recalls, “but my interest in running actually began back in Form 4 at SM Sains Setiu Terengganu when he managed to get champion in annual cross country in 2017. I even represented Kolej Mara Kulim in the 800m and road relay during my foundation in 2019. Back then, I never really understood proper training—I just played football.” Though his early forays into running were casual, the lockdown during COVID-19 forced him to re-examine his relationship with physical activity. With team sports off-limits in Terengganu, Faaiz found himself embracing the solitary challenge of running—a decision that would ignite an inner transformation.

His initial experiences on the track were far from triumphant. “My first race was a fun run at D Baruh in Besut, Terengganu. It was a 4km race, but I could only manage to run less than 1km; the rest, I had to walk to finish,” he laughs ruefully. This humbling start was a double-edged sword—while it exposed his physical limitations, it also planted the seeds of self-doubt. Could he ever truly transform from someone who barely ran a kilometre to a serious endurance competitor?
The turning point in Faaiz’s journey came unexpectedly during his quest to break a personal barrier. “I nearly gave up when I trained very hard to break the sub-40 minute barrier for a 10km race,” he admits. After three races ended in failure, the weight of disappointment pressed down on him. Yet, in that dark moment, he found unexpected motivation in the success of others. “Seeing people on the podium, the desire to win just surged inside me.” That spark of determination pushed him to reframe his internal narrative—every setback became a lesson, every failure a stepping stone towards his ultimate goal.
Determined to conquer his self-doubt, Faaiz overhauled his training regimen. He shifted from sporadic runs to a disciplined schedule that included not only increased mileage—from 20-40km to 60km-80km per week—but also structured workouts like race-pace segments and long threshold sessions. “Sometimes, I add a 20-minute segment at half marathon race pace into my long runs,” he shares. Incorporating these rigorous yet calculated efforts, he gradually built the physical endurance and mental fortitude required for longer distances. With every training session, he learned to silence the inner critic that once urged him to quit.

Despite his meticulous preparation, Faaiz entered the Pacer Endurance Challenge with modest expectations. “I only targeted 35km because my longest distance I had ever done was 26km; then I would give up.” Yet, as the race unfolded, his internal battle intensified. At 33km, his hamstring began to cramp, and the physical pain threatened to overwhelm him. In that grueling moment, his mind turned to an unexpected source of strength—a burst of humour mixed with defiant determination. “I just thought, ‘When will the second runner behind me stop running?’” That quirky, almost irreverent thought shattered the paralysis of self-doubt. Bolstered by the cheers of friends and the echo of his own resolve, Faaiz pushed beyond his perceived limits and triumphed.
Victory at the Pacer Endurance Challenge 2025 is not the conclusion but a milestone in Faaiz’s ongoing battle against self-doubt. With his sights now set on the Terengganu Marathon—where he aims to break the sub-1:20 barrier in the half marathon category—he is committed to evolving both physically and mentally. For aspiring runners and anyone grappling with their inner demons, his message is clear: “Don’t be afraid to try something new. Always keep learning and keep trying because there is no failure in the process—it’s either you win or you learn, unless you quit.”
