Australia’s Max Neumann and Germany’s Anne Haug won the inaugural Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) European Open triathlon titles in Spain recently.
In Ibiza, the race covered 100km comprising a 2km swim, 80km cycle, and 18km run. The women’s race featured world-class champion Lucy Charles-Barclay, two-time Olympian Anne Haug and Ashleigh Gentle.
Known for her swimming prowess, Charles-Barclay held a big lead out of the swim to lead the day. It wasn’t till the run, when Anne Haug surpassed Charles-Barclay to win with a 2 minute 30 second gap over Gentle.
The men’s was closely contended with the top 3 PTO ranked athletes – Max Neumann, Kristian Blummenfelt and Magnus Ditlev. Olympic Beijing 2008 champion, Jan Frodeno also made a comeback to racing and made things interesting alongside another Olympian triathlon champion, Alistair Brownlee.
The next PTO Tour triathlon is the US Open in Milwaukee on 4-5 August.
