Australian Triathlete Emma Moffatt has created history even before the Olympic Games can begin in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June. Moffatt is proudly the first Australian Triathlete to qualify for three Olympic Games.
“It feels amazing and I am quite proud of it. But it’s only just happened so I’m sure over the coming months it will sink in actually what I’ve achieved,” said Moffatt.
After a disappointing race at London’s Olympic Games, the 31-year-old said her eyes were set on a podium finish in Rio de Janeiro after she qualified earlier this month at a race on the Gold Coast.
Moffatt won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics, but four years later crashed on the first lap of the bike leg at the London Games. She said it was one of the greatest disappointments of her career.
“Initially it was a real shock to the system. Never in your race plan do you have that you’re going to crash out on the first lap — especially at an Olympic Games — when you’ve put so much time and effort in to preparing for one event,” said Moffatt.
But Moffatt said the disappointment quickly wore off as she refocused her training for Rio, qualifying earlier this month. Her partner Daniel Bowker also qualified for the Rio Olympics in kayaking.
“I think when you put on the green and gold and you’re representing your country at such a major sporting event, you probably don’t aim for anything less.”
