Since she was seven, Flora Duffy had been dabbling in triathlon in her home country of Bermuda. In this 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 33-year-old surpassed all the favourites to win the gold medal in triathlon.

The 3-time Olympian with multiple world championship titles to her name has won her country’s first ever Olympic gold medal. Such a high honour for Duffy who was sixth after the 1500m swim and third after the 40km bike at the Odaiba Marine Park in Tokyo. In the 10km run, she surged to dominate the run leg and pulled ahead to cross the finish line in 1:55.36 hrs.

“I am so thrilled I could execute, and yeah, I achieved my dream of winning a gold medal, but also winning Bermuda’s first gold medal.”, said Duffy.

More than a minute later, 2020 world champion Georgia Taylor-Brown (UK) took silver, while 2019 world champion Katie Zaferes (USA) took bronze.

Britain’s Taylor-Brown showed guts although she lost ground on the leading group during the cycling leg when her bike’s rear tyre suffered a puncture. She digged deep to accelerate past USA’s Zaferes midway through the run section to take an impressive silver for Great Britain.
