Spartan racers should always be vigilant on the race course as it can carry additional obstacles like a Bull Run, as Matthew Kievlan found out the hard way.
On an unassuming Kualoa Ranceh in Oahu, Hawaii, Kievlan was passing a group of cows which had meandered onto the race course, but was suddenly attacked by a cow.
“There was a bunch of cows off to the left and I was going to run by them. One of the largest ones broke free and charged me,” said Matthew Kievlan.
Shortly after the attack, Kievlan says he blacked out and later found himself waking up in a hospital bed, but couldn’t remember where he was or what year it was. Fortunately, he didn’t suffer any injuries or broken bones.
A Spartan race is a series of obstacle courses including wall climbing, mud crawling, sprinting and fire jumping. This was Keivlan’s fourth spartan competition but the first time running into this dilemma. He is disappointed he didn’t finish the race and suggests race officials consider changing the course route in the future.
“It may be a lesson for us all to be aware of what can actually happen. I’m kind of at a loss for words of what happened. I don’t really know what to think about it, but I’m really glad I survived,” Kievlan said.
