The Grassroots Training Hack: How Setia Alam Runners is Fueling the SCORE Marathon

Signing up for a major event like the SCORE Marathon is a thrilling commitment, but the moment the confirmation email arrives, the reality of the training sets in. The months ahead often promise early alarms, aching muscles, and hundreds of lonely miles on quiet pavement. It is an intimidating prospect that can make even the most enthusiastic runner second-guess their registration.

But what if the road to the starting line did not have to be a solitary grind?

Enter Setia Alam Runners (SAR). In less than a year, this grassroots neighbourhood crew has grown to see 50 to 70 passionate runners gathering for every single session, and they are officially changing the way locals prepare for the SCORE Marathon.

More Than Just a Logo Placement
The partnership between SAR and SCORE is a testament to the marathon’s commitment to the local running community. It began simply enough. SAR’s founder and captain, Kelvin Lim, reached out to the SCORE organisers hoping to secure a few promotional perks for his members, knowing many of them were eager to tackle the race.

The SCORE team, however, saw something much bigger. They saw a highly structured, deeply passionate community that perfectly embodied the spirit of the marathon. Instead of just offering standard perks like priority registration, they invited SAR to become an Official Run Club.

“When this news was announced to the SAR members, they felt proud that a small and new running group had become something official,” Kelvin shares. But as he is quick to point out, the title comes with real responsibility. “We’re not just a name on their website. We actually play a few active roles.”

Demystifying the Marathon
SAR’s primary mission as an Official Run Club is to bridge the gap between the everyday jogger and the SCORE Marathon start line. A massive race can feel out of reach for a beginner, but having a trusted, local club backing the event instantly breaks down that barrier of intimidation.

To get their members race-ready, SAR has entirely integrated SCORE Marathon preparations into their DNA. Their weekly sessions in Setia Alam are no longer just casual jogs; they are targeted training blocks. Runners tackle tempo runs, fartleks, interval training, and hill repeats. Their very own co-captains, who are a certified athletics coach and a Pilates instructor, lead running technique workshops and build the core strength necessary to survive marathon mileage.

Yet, for all the serious physical preparation, the true value of training with SAR for the SCORE Marathon is entirely emotional.

“Training alone is great for mental strength, but training in a group provides significant energy, motivation, and accountability that solo workouts often lack,” Kelvin explains. “To be honest, training for a marathon is lonely. Running in a group, making jokes, and laughing will keep you showing up.”

The Road Ahead
As the countdown to the SCORE Marathon continues, the energy within SAR is palpable. They are proving that the hardest parts of marathon training are best conquered together.

For runners currently staring down their SCORE training plans, Kelvin offers a golden rule: “Be consistent in your training, but never skip your rest day for your body to recover. Learn to listen to your body, be patient, and never progress your training aggressively.”

The SCORE Marathon will challenge you, test your limits, and demand your best. But if you join the ranks of SAR on your way to the starting line, you will never have to face those challenges alone.
