38,000 Runners Gear Up for the 2023 Shanghai International Marathon Spectacle This Sunday

Shanghai is set to host the 2023 Shanghai International Marathon, welcoming 38,000 runners in a resilient rebound from pandemic disruptions. The event features a 42-kilometer full marathon with 20,000 participants and a 6km health run for fitness enthusiasts.

A highlight this year is the introduction of bespoke silver trophies for the top three marathon finishers, depicting a runner crossing the finish line against the backdrop of Shanghai’s landmarks. The newly-designed medals for all marathon finishers were unveiled days before the race.

The iconic finish line at the Shanghai Stadium promises a stunning backdrop, with route enhancements including a scenic one-kilometer riverside green path in the Xuhui District and changes to improve the overall running experience.

Over 30 elite international runners, including Kinde Atanew Ayalew and Tadu Teshome Nare from Ethiopia, will add a global flair to the competition.

The 2023 Shanghai Marathon marks a return to its grandeur, with the last 38,000-strong participant turnout in 2019. Scale reductions in 2020 and 2022 and a 2021 cancellation due to the pandemic preceded this triumphant comeback.

As Shanghai anticipates the event, the 2023 Shanghai Marathon promises to be a spectacular showcase of resilience, athleticism, and the unifying power of sport.
