Germany Seals Mixed Relay Gold as World Aquatics Championships Open Water Wraps in Singapore

Germany closed out the open water swimming competition at the World Aquatics Championships – Singapore 2025 in golden style on Sunday (July 20), clinching victory in the Mixed 4x1500m Relay held at Sentosa. The German quartet, anchored by Florian Wellbrock, stopped the clock at 1:09:13.3 to take top honours, adding yet another gold to Wellbrock’s already glittering haul this week.
Wellbrock’s performance capped off a phenomenal championship for the German star, who had earlier claimed victories in the men’s 3km knockout, 5km, and 10km races. Speaking after the race, a visibly exhausted Wellbrock admitted, “I’m still speechless… I have no idea how I did it. We made history today.”
Reflecting on the gruelling schedule, Wellbrock added, “Yesterday, after the knockout sprint, I already felt like my body is done. Today, my body is done, done. I think it was a combination of empty body, emotional mind. One week of racing all events is really tough, especially with the pressure today.”
Italy came through for the silver medal in 1:09:15.4, with Hungary narrowly taking bronze in 1:09:16.7 after a fiercely contested sprint finish among the front pack.
Singapore’s team of Chantal Liew, Artyom Lukasevits, Kate Ona, and Russel Pang placed 14th, clocking 1:15:39.0 on home waters.
The relay concluded an exciting week of open water action that showcased the growing popularity and competitiveness of the discipline. Wellbrock praised the addition of new race formats like the knockout sprint and relay for bringing fresh energy to the sport, stating, “It’s really important for our sport to grow.”
With the open water events wrapped, attention now shifts to the pool competitions as the World Aquatics Championships continue through August 3.
