From Singapore to the Trails: A Send-Off for “Chiang Mai Thailand by UTMB” Runners

On November 23, 2024, Singapore’s trail running community came together at HUONE Singapore for a Pre-Race Send-Off Celebration, organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Singapore Offic. This event celebrated the spirit of adventure as runners prepared for the Chiang Mai Thailand by UTMB, one of Asia’s premier trail running events and an Asia Pacific Major in the UTMB World Series, offering double running stones towards participating in UTMB.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) played a central role in making this event a memorable one. Ms. Yatika Kaewborisoot, Director of TAT Singapore, highlighted in her opening address Thailand’s world-class commitment to sports tourism and unique cultural experiences, encouraging attendees to explore the country beyond the trails.

Trail Runners Singapore’s founder Iskandar Shahril, a seasoned ultrarunner and advocate for the trail running community, shared his experiences and provided practical advice for race day. Special guests Suda Cartoon Tantiveerasut and June Visesnat Po-ngern, event ambassadors from Thailand, inspired attendees with their stories of perseverance and insights into navigating the steep ascents and technical descents of the Chiang Mai UTMB. From essential gear recommendations to tips on acclimatization, they ensured runners were well-prepared to tackle Chiang Mai’s challenging trails.

The event also celebrated Thailand’s vibrant cultural and culinary offerings. TAT showcased must-visit landmarks like Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the trendy Nimman area, and iconic local dishes such as Khao Soi Mae Manee. Participants were also introduced to Thailand’s packed 2025 sports calendar, underscoring TAT’s commitment to positioning the country as a global hub for trail running in particular, and mass participation sports in general.

The celebration ended with refreshments and networking, leaving runners inspired and excited for their journey ahead. Thanks to the efforts of TAT Singapore, this event was not just a send-off—it was a gateway to an extraordinary adventure, blending the thrill of trail running with the beauty and culture of Thailand.

Ms. Bunjarat Suharitdamrong, Executive Director of Running Connect, organizer for Chiang Mai Thailand by UTMB expects 6,000 runners to take part in this year’s race.

All the best to runners from Singapore!
