Andrew Goh Zheng Yen overcame illness to return to the pool for the men’s 50m breaststroke heats at the World Aquatics Championships – Singapore 2025, clocking 28.21s on Tuesday, 29 July 2025.

The 20-year-old Malaysian swimmer had earlier withdrawn from the 100m breaststroke on Day 1 due to fever, which kept him out of the water for several days. While the result wasn’t what he had hoped for, just making it to the blocks was a victory of its own.

“Obviously not too satisfied, definitely not my best,” said Goh in a post-race interview with Malaysia Aquatics. “But you know, came here on the first day I felt like sick, I had fever and stuff, so it was like four days without swimming.”

Despite placing 47th overall, Goh was proud of his ability to execute the race under the circumstances. “If I were to rate it, I would say my execution was there. But I think my power and strength was a little bit taken out by the sickness.”

His return to the pool demonstrated strong mental resolve. “I can’t blame anyone for that, but myself. So, can only come back stronger,” he added, keeping his focus on long-term goals and future opportunities.

With his 50m race now behind him, Goh will shift gears to recovery and prepare for upcoming challenges. He remains optimistic: “There’s always more Worlds that I can go to.”
