35KM of Firsts: Yusuf’s Bold Step at Tunggul Melati Trail 2025

Muhammad Yusuf Jamil isn’t new to running, but when it comes to trail, he’s stepping into fresh terrain. After a seven-year gap since his first trail event, he’s returning to the dirt paths and steep climbs at Tunggul Melati Trail 2025 (TMT’25). He has signed up for the 35KM category in what he calls a personal milestone.
“This is only my second trail race ever,” he says. “And I see it as a way to challenge myself beyond what I’ve done before.”
Yusuf’s first off-road experience was the Malaysia Eco-Sports Challenge in Tampin back in 2018, where he ran the 20KM trail and road segment as part of a three-discipline team event. “Even though I was just called in to fill the slot,” he recalls, “it turned out to be one of the most unforgettable memories.” His team placed 10th, and that unexpected success planted the seed for a future in trail running.
Now, TMT’25 marks a turning point. The 35KM course will be the longest trail race he has attempted, doubling the distance of his previous outing. It also marks his first serious return to the sport since 2018. “I’ve never gone this far before,” he says. “It’s a big test for my stamina, strength, and mental toughness.”

He knows the trail won’t forgive poor preparation. “Many trail runners I know say it takes a different level of training compared to road running,” Yusuf shares. “That’s why I’ve been doing hill repeats, strength training, and long-distance runs to build endurance and adapt to the terrain.” His Garmin watch is now a key training partner, helping him structure sessions and monitor progress.
One major focus is conquering his climbing weakness. “Uphill is my biggest challenge,” he admits. “I’m fine with downhills as long as I trust my footing. But those climbs? That’s where I burn out. I’ve been pushing hard to get stronger there.”
Nutrition also plays a big role in his preparation. “I focus on a balanced intake of carbs and protein, especially before and after training. It’s key to recovery and performance.”
Consistency, however, hasn’t come easy. With work commitments taking up much of his time, Yusuf has had to find creative ways to train without overexerting himself. “I haven’t had any serious injuries, Alhamdulillah,” he says. “But staying consistent is a challenge. Still, I don’t use that as an excuse. I find time when I can and focus on smart preparation.”

What sets this race apart for Yusuf isn’t just the distance. It’s the mindset. “I didn’t train properly for my first race,” he admits. “This time, I want to be ready in every way. Physically, mentally, emotionally. I’m showing up with full intention.”
He’s also excited about the race-day atmosphere and the community vibe. “Running alongside more experienced trail runners is what I’ve been looking forward to,” he says. “Even though this is my second event, I see it as a fresh start.”
His advice to runners stepping up to 35KM? “Balance is everything. Train both body and mind. Eat well. Prepare smart. Even a short race can break you if you’re not ready.”
Looking ahead, TMT’25 isn’t his finish line. It’s just the beginning. “If this goes well, I’ll push further and try even longer distances,” he says. “This 35KM is just the start of a new journey.”
At Tunggul Melati Trail 2025, Yusuf isn’t just chasing a medal. He’s running toward progress, passion, and a renewed purpose.
