The 19-Year-Old Sensation Who’s Taking Open Water Swimming by Storm: Ho Jiaren’s SEA Games Dream

At just 19 years old, Ho Jiaren is already making waves in the world of open water swimming, and his recent victory at the Port Dickson Open Water Swim Classic (PD OWS Classic) 2025 has firmly placed him on the radar of Malaysia’s most promising swimming talents. But this isn’t just a success story about a young athlete’s breakthrough moment – it’s about relentless dedication, unshakeable belief, and a dream to make it to the SEA Games.
Jiaren’s journey into the open waters was not the typical route. His passion for swimming began with pool races, but it was his coach, Albert, who saw something in him that led to the life-changing decision to dive into the world of open water swimming. “I’ve always been a long-distance swimmer, so my coach suggested I try open water swimming,” Jiaren says. “I gave it a shot in 2022, and it turned out to be the perfect fit. It was challenging, but I loved it.”
At first, the sport was daunting. The unpredictability of open water was unlike anything he had faced in the pool. But Jiaren thrived on this new challenge, finding that the vast open sea brought out a new strength within him. And just like that, the dream began to form – the dream of competing not just in local events, but at the prestigious SEA Games.

That dream started to feel real when he qualified for the 2022 SUKMA Games. “At first, I didn’t know what was possible. My coach, Albert, would always tell us to aim high, but I never imagined I’d make it to SUKMA,” Jiaren reflects. “When I qualified, that’s when it hit me – I could really go far in this sport.”
Jiaren’s victory in the 2000m event at the PD OWS Classic 2025 only solidified that belief. In a race where the competition was fierce, his strategy was as much about mental focus as it was about technique. “I kept telling myself, ‘This is just a fast swim,’” he shares. “I focused on the swimmer ahead of me and told myself I had to catch him.”
In the face of challenges, Jiaren’s approach is a combination of self-talk and sheer determination. “It’s all about staying positive and pushing through the tough moments,” he says. “When it gets hard, I remind myself to keep going. Self-talk is powerful – it keeps me from getting distracted by negative thoughts.”

The victory at the PD OWS Classic was more than just a personal achievement; it was a powerful statement of what is possible when passion meets discipline. And now, with his SEA Games dream closer than ever, Jiaren is driven by an unrelenting hunger for more. “Winning this race has given me a huge confidence boost,” he says. “I know I’m capable of achieving more, and now my sights are set on the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.”
Jiaren’s story is a testament to what can be achieved with the right mindset and unwavering commitment. For him, the SEA Games is not just a goal – it’s the next step in a journey that has only just begun. “I’ve been training hard every day, and now I’m focused on making my SEA Games dream come true,” he shares. “I know it’s going to take everything I’ve got, but I’m ready.”
At 19, Ho Jiaren has already shown that age is no barrier to success. His breakthrough victory is just the beginning of a story that promises to inspire future generations of swimmers. Through dedication, self-belief, and a relentless pursuit of his dreams, Jiaren is proving that anything is possible – and the SEA Games is just within reach.
