Iran and New Zealand Share Spoils after Thrilling Four-Goal Draw
Iran and New Zealand played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in their opening Group G match of the 2026 World Cup at the Los Angeles Stadium. The hard-fought result leaves all four teams in the group entirely level on one point following Belgium’s identical draw with Egypt earlier in the day. Played against a highly charged backdrop of fan protests inside a packed arena, the match immediately delivered intense on-field drama as New Zealand narrowly missed out on claiming their first-ever victory at a World Cup finals.
The All Whites claimed an early advantage in the 7th minute when forward Elijah Just thumped a volley into the back of the net after Chris Wood held up the ball to provide the assist. Iran responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser, with captain Mehdi Taremi striking the right post with a powerful drive from outside the box. The Asian side successfully drew level in the 32nd minute when Ramin Rezaeian pounced on a loose ball after a blocked shot and stabbed it past goalkeeper Max Crocombe from close range, shortly before Ali Nemati had a header disallowed for offside.
New Zealand restored their lead in the 54th minute when Just combined seamlessly with Wood for a second time, surging into space before lofting a clinical finish over the advancing Alireza Beiranvand. Iran fought back once more to equalise just 10 minutes later in the 64th minute. Mohammad Mohebbi found space near the penalty spot to meet an inviting cross, directing a glancing header into the bottom corner of the net off the inside of the post.
Both sides pressed aggressively for a late winner during a frantic final period, with New Zealand accumulating eight shots on target from 14 attempts, whilst Iran finished the match with 17 total efforts. Deep into five minutes of added time, Ryan Thomas executed a vital defensive intervention to clear a late Iranian corner off the line and preserve the draw. The final whistle leaves the group completely wide open ahead of the next round of fixtures, which will see Iran face Belgium in Los Angeles and New Zealand travel to Vancouver to take on Egypt.
