Kenyan sensation Brigid Kosgei made a historic debut at the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon, setting a new women’s record with an astonishing time of 2:19:15. The fifth edition of the event drew 25,000 participants from 168 countries, turning the streets of the UAE capital into a global showcase of running talent.
Kosgei, a five-time major marathon champion, finished a minute faster than the previous record and nearly five minutes ahead of her closest competitor, Hawi Feysa Gejia (2:24:03), with Ethlemahu Sintayehu securing the third spot in 2:25:36.
In the men’s category, Eritrean Amare Hailemicael Samson claimed victory with an impressive time of 2:07:10, two minutes ahead of Kenyan Leonard Barsoton (2:09:37), while Ilham Tanui Ozbilen secured the third position in his marathon debut with a time of 2:10:16.
The 10 km race witnessed Ethiopian Halefom Kesay securing victory in 28:27 minutes, and Zenashwork Yenw covering the same distance in 33:23 minutes.
The ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon and its accompanying relay race collectively attracted 2,863 participants. The 10km race had 5,320 participants, with 7,575 individuals in the 5 km race and 9,280 runners in the 2.5 km race.
Aref Hamad Al-Awani, secretary general of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said to Arab News that “the fifth edition of the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon witnessed a distinguished atmosphere, especially in light of the unprecedented number of participants who belong to diverse cultures and different levels of physical fitness., with over 25,000 individuals hailing from 168 countries, including elite athletes, people of determination, and Paralympics participants underscoring our unwavering commitment to inclusivity within the UAE.”
