Substitute Manzambi Sparks Late Swiss Goal Fest Against 10-Man Bosnia
Switzerland surged to the top of Group B after an explosive final 20 minutes saw them secure a 4-1 victory over 10-man Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Los Angeles Stadium. Following a sterile and frustrating opening 70 minutes, the introduction of 20-year-old substitute Johan Manzambi completely transformed the encounter, breaking down a stubborn Bosnian defensive block that had previously suffocated the Swiss attack.
The turning point arrived in the 74th minute, a mere 166 seconds after Manzambi entered the pitch. On only his fourth touch of the game, the young Freiburg midfielder instinctively latched onto a headed clearance near the penalty spot and thumped a vicious first-time volley past Bosnian goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj to break the deadlock.
Bosnia’s hopes of salvaging a result suffered a fatal blow in the 80th minute when defender Tarik Muharemović was shown a straight red card for hauling down Breel Embolo to deny a clear goalscoring opportunity. Switzerland ruthlessly capitalised on the numerical advantage just four minutes later, with substitute Ruben Vargas curling a precise finish into the bottom right corner after being teed up by Embolo.
The closing stages of the match descended into a chaotic goal frenzy. Vargas turned provider in the 90th minute, setting up Manzambi for his second close-range finish of the night. Although Bosnian substitute Ermin Mahmić pulled a goal back deep into stoppage time with a spectacular 71mph volley, veteran midfielder Granit Xhaka immediately restored the three-goal cushion by confidently converting a 97th-minute penalty. The victory puts Switzerland in a commanding position to reach the knockout stages ahead of their group finale against co-hosts Canada.
