The Gold Coast Virtual Marathon kicked off on 1 July and organisers published the current leaderboard rankings after the first weekend of virtual racing.
Malaysia’s Loh Chooi Fern currently tops the women’s 10km ranking at 42 mins 40 sec.
In an email interview with ToughASIA, Chooi Fern described that she completed the 10km run with her brother, as a part of training with a group of friends. Since the Movement Control Order (MCO) started, she took the opportunity to rest and recover from a previous injury. She has since used this stay-at-home period to do strength training as well as running drills to get back to fitness.

Unfortunately, Chooi Fern may not do the GCM virtual run again to improve her timing, as she enjoyed it as part of a fun activity with her friends.
This means that with about 3 weeks remaining of the 10km virtual race, there is a possibility that she may not continue to be at the top of the leaderboard.

Chooi Fern does however love the actual Gold Coast Marathon. The 28-year old tax consultant from Kuala Lumpur who is also Malaysia’s fastest female marathoner in 2019 and 2018, posted her personal best timing of 2 hours 58 mins at last year’s Gold Coast Marathon. So, indeed she looks forward to the next edition of this event next year, and hopes to go there with her group of running friends.
