From Personal Bests to Shared Victories: Elaine’s Mission as a Pacer

Pacing is an art form often overshadowed by the spotlight on elite runners, but for Elaine Khor Yee Lim, it’s the heartbeat of her running journey. With 27 pacing assignments since 2022, she’s a seasoned veteran in the role, yet her motivation remains as fresh as the day she began.

“Pacing is about giving back to the running community,” Elaine says. “When runners look to you to guide them, you’re not just carrying a time flag—you’re carrying their hopes too.”

In the world of competitive and recreational racing, pacers play an often-overlooked role. They set the rhythm, encourage struggling runners, and ensure participants don’t burn out before the finish line. Elaine’s approach reflects her belief that a pacer’s role goes beyond maintaining a steady pace. “You’re also a cheerleader, a coach, and sometimes even a therapist mid-race,” she jokes.

Elaine vividly remembers a turning point during the Score Run 2023. A runner approached her mid-race, on the verge of giving up. “I told him, ‘One step at a time, just stay with me,’” she recalls. He went on to finish the race and set a personal best. “Moments like that remind me why I love being a pacer. You’re not just helping someone finish—you’re helping them believe in themselves.”

Her preparation as a pacer is a testament to the discipline required. From rigorous training schedules to carefully planned hydration and nutrition strategies, Elaine leaves no detail to chance. For the PUMA Nitro Night Run 2024, she ensured that every runner in her group had an equal shot at success. “I carried an extra water flask and gels, just in case anyone needed them,” she says.

Elaine’s story also highlights the unique challenges pacers face. A memorable incident during a hilly half marathon required her to adjust her pacing on the fly, running faster on downhill stretches to make up for lost time. “Flexibility is key. It’s not just about keeping a perfect pace—it’s about adapting to the course and your group’s needs,” she explains.

Beyond the technicalities, Elaine’s true impact lies in her ability to inspire. Whether it’s encouraging runners to stay consistent or guiding first-timers to enjoy their journey, she’s become a beacon for others. “Running alongside Jeremy at the PUMA Nitro Night Run, we created an atmosphere where runners felt supported and motivated. That’s the magic of pacing,” she says.

As Elaine continues her journey, she hopes to inspire more runners to embrace pacing and recognise its profound role in creating successful events. “Pacers are the unsung heroes of races. We’re there to make sure no one is left behind, and everyone finishes with a smile,” she says.

Elaine’s journey reminds us that running is not just about speed or finishing times; it’s about the connections forged along the way. Through her work as a pacer, she’s championed the spirit of running: inclusion, determination, and the simple joy of helping others cross the finish line.
