Eizlan Battles Height Hurdle and Strong Rivals with 2.20m SEA Games Gold Target

National high jump champion Mohamad Eizlan Bin Dahalan is approaching the SEA Games with a specific technical strategy designed to overcome physical disadvantages and clear his non-negotiable minimum Gold height of 2.20 metres. The 2.18m jumper acknowledges that achieving this career-defining leap is crucial to both medal contention and upholding Malaysia’s strong high jump tradition.

Eizlan confirmed that hitting the 2.20m mark is the minimum requirement for success: “To win the SEA Games, I must jump 2.20m and above.” To clear this crucial height, the technical work is prioritised on his run-up and rhythm.

He explained how his physical stature dictates his need for speed: “To get a good take-off, I need a good run-up because it helps me take off better. Since I am not very tall, I need good speed to gain momentum.”

This need for efficiency extends to his competitive strategy. Eizlan revealed that he manages the gruelling nature of the final by minimising attempts. “I will target and focus on the first jump because jumping two or three times can be quite tiring during the competition. So, I will ensure I make the first jump and use the opportunity as best as possible.”

Addressing past challenges with consistent coaching, Eizlan expressed confidence in his current preparation. “Guidance was a bit lacking before, but with consistent preparation, God willing, it is possible,” he said. He views the highly competitive field, featuring rivals he chooses not to name, as motivation: “As we know, anything can happen. Competitive spirit and focus influence performance. The stronger the opponent, the stronger we become.”

He concluded by stressing that his sole focus remains internal: “I only focus on my own target and technique to achieve a good mark.”
