DR Congo Stun Portugal with Historic Draw on World Cup Return
The Democratic Republic of Congo marked their return to the World Cup stage after a 52-year absence by securing a historic 1-1 draw against tournament favourites Portugal in their Group K opener. Competing at the global finals for the first time since their 1974 appearance as Zaire, the African nation showcased immense tactical discipline and mental fortitude to recover from an early deficit. The unexpected result delivered DR Congo their first-ever World Cup point and goal, frustrating a star-studded Portuguese squad seeking a dominant start to their campaign.
Portugal appeared poised for a comfortable afternoon when they broke the deadlock just six minutes into the contest. Winger Pedro Neto delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, allowing Joao Neves to rise and power a header into the net from 15 metres out. However, despite dominating possession, the European heavyweights struggled to penetrate a deep and resolute Congolese defensive block for the remainder of the match. Forty-one-year-old captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who made history by becoming the oldest player to start a World Cup fixture in his record-equalling sixth tournament, was rendered largely ineffective and failed to register a shot on target.
Content to absorb relentless pressure and strike on the counter-attack, DR Congo steadily grew in confidence as the first half progressed. Their patient and pragmatic approach was spectacularly rewarded deep into first-half stoppage time when Arthur Masuaku whipped a dangerous cross into the Portuguese penalty area. Striker Yoane Wissa capitalised on poor defensive marking to steer a crucial header past the goalkeeper, instantly writing his name into the history books as the scorer of his nation’s maiden World Cup goal and altering the entire complexion of the match.
The second period evolved into a tense tactical battle, with Portugal adopting greater urgency but continuing to lack a clinical edge in the final third. A spectacular overhead kick from Joao Cancelo was swiftly ruled out for offside, whilst Ronaldo dragged two late efforts wide of the mark from close range. DR Congo nearly snatched a sensational upset victory when Cedric Bakambu struck the woodwork on a rapid counter-attack, but the African side ultimately held firm to claim a monumental draw ahead of their upcoming group fixtures against Colombia and Uzbekistan.
