Belgium Recovers to Draw with Egypt after Lukaku Forces Equaliser
Belgium fought back from a first-half deficit to salvage a 1-1 draw against Egypt in their opening Group G match of the 2026 World Cup at Lumen Field. A capacity crowd of 66,775 witnessed a highly competitive encounter played under intense summer heat, which prompted the implementation of mandatory cooling breaks. The result leaves Egypt still hunting for their first-ever World Cup victory after 8 attempts spanning 92 years, though securing a point against the group favourites represents a highly credible opening performance.
The African side established a deserved lead in the 20th minute when midfielder Emam Ashour thundered a brilliant 20-yard strike into the bottom corner past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, courtesy of a precise assist from captain Mohamed Salah. Egypt continued to threaten before the interval and nearly doubled their advantage when Mostafa Zico’s angled drive across goal was smartly turned away by Courtois. Belgium struggled to register a single shot on target during a frustrating opening period, as the Egyptian defence maintained a resolute and compact shape.
The complexion of the match shifted significantly in the second half, initiating a series of missed opportunities for both nations. Salah saw a downward header saved by Courtois, with Ashour blasting the loose rebound off target, whilst at the other end, Kevin De Bruyne rattled the outside of the post with a curling free-kick. Seeking a tactical breakthrough, Belgium manager Rudi Garcia introduced record goalscorer Romelu Lukaku from the substitute bench in the 66th minute to alter the frontline dynamics.
Lukaku made an instantaneous impact just 22 seconds after entering the pitch, causing panic in the six-yard box as a dangerous low cross from Thomas Meunier was inadvertently diverted into the net for an own goal by Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany. Both teams pushed aggressively for a decisive winner late on, with Mostafa Shobeir producing an authoritative save to deny a Brandon Mechele header, whilst Mechele executed a crucial block to thwart Omar Marmoush at the other end. Ultimately, the spoils were shared, turning attention toward upcoming group fixtures against Iran and New Zealand.
