Langkawi International Ultra Run 2025 to Debut Malaysia’s First Back-to-Back Trail-Road Ultra at Iconic Dataran Lang
Langkawi will make ultra-running history this weekend with the introduction of Malaysia’s first continuous trail-to-road ultra challenge, as over 1,000 participants from 25 countries gear up for the Langkawi International Ultra Run 2025, taking place from 21–22 June at the island’s iconic Dataran Lang.
Organised by Lumen Sports and supported by the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), this year’s edition marks a bold evolution of an event that has grown steadily over the years into one of Malaysia’s premier endurance fixtures.
The newly introduced 50km trail + 50km road category is the first of its kind in the country, requiring participants to complete a 50km trail segment before proceeding straight into the 50km road race.
With the trail cut-off time aligned with the road flag-off, some runners will have little or no rest between stages, making strategy and pacing more critical than ever.
“This is the first time such a format is being introduced in Malaysia. It’s a true test of endurance and race management,” said Jeff Ooi, race director.
“Those who push hard on the trail may risk burning out on the road, while those who pace well could benefit from a short break before the second leg.”
The 2025 edition will also mark the first time the event is held at Dataran Lang, Langkawi’s most recognisable landmark.
To capitalise on the location’s charm, organisers have introduced night races for the 21km, 10km, and 5km road categories — a shift from previous editions which featured only morning flag-offs.
“Everyone has seen the eagle statue in the day. We wanted to give runners a new experience — racing under the stars, with the eagle beautifully lit in the background,” added Jeff.
Also new to this year’s programme is a standalone 50km trail race, catering to Malaysia’s growing trail-running community, and an upgraded 20km vertical challenge, which will now flag off from Dream Forest Langkawi, one of the island’s newest tourism attractions. The vertical race was previously held at Gunung Raya Foothill.
Returning to anchor the programme is the prestigious 100km Round Island Ultra-Road, with defending champion and course record-holder Christopher Timms of United Kingdom slated to return and defend his crown.
With nine race categories on offer, including the 50km road, Ultra Kids events (2km and 500m), and the debut of multi-terrain formats, the Langkawi International Ultra Run continues to grow in scale and diversity. International runners make up 20 per cent of this year’s field, further enhancing the event’s regional stature.
The event also aligns with LADA’s “Naturally Langkawi” initiative, which promotes the island as a sustainable, experience-rich tourism destination. As Malaysia’s first UNESCO Global Geopark, Langkawi’s unique blend of natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and biodiversity creates a stunning stage for endurance racing.
“This event exemplifies the Naturally Langkawi vision — blending our island’s natural charm with globally appealing experiences,” said Dato’ Haslina Abdul Hamid, Chief Executive Officer of LADA. “Langkawi’s UNESCO Global Geopark status is something we are proud to share with the world, and events like these provide the perfect platform to do so.”
“The Langkawi International Ultra Run has long been a feature on our sporting calendar, and we are proud to see it continue evolving year after year. With innovative additions like the trail-to-road ultra and the scenic night races at Dataran Lang, the event continues to raise the bar while reinforcing Langkawi’s appeal as a premier sports tourism destination,” she added.
With strong institutional backing, expanded race offerings, and a landmark venue, the Langkawi International Ultra Run 2025 is poised to deliver an unforgettable weekend of endurance, community, and natural beauty — all against the stunning backdrop of one of Malaysia’s most treasured islands.
