Fittest Woman on Earth, Tia-Clair Toomey reaped gold at the women’s 58kg weightlifting category after a dramatic victory at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Australian Toomey claimed gold with the last lift of the competition, a 114kg clean and jerk that gave her the gold medal by just 1kg over second placed Canadian Tali Darsigny. Toomey finished with six successful lifts for a total of 201kg, Darsigny claimed silver with 200kg, Solomon Islands Jenly Wini won the bronze with 189kg.

“This gold medal means more than just a gold medal. My family, my team, my husband, we’ve trained so hard for this, it is a dream come true. I didn’t know exactly how much was on the bar, the crowd was so electric, I was really in the zone.” said Toomey.

Toomey started well in the snatch, successfully completing all three of her lifts at 80, 84 and 87kg. But Canada’s Darsigny was the last to step up to the platform and lifted 85 and 88kg before failing at 90kg on her final lift, taking a 1kg advantage into the clean and jerk.
