Malaysians caught running from a zombie apocalypse into 2017

Zombies made up to look like a scene right out of a zombie apocalypse movie

Thousands of Malaysians spent their final night of 2016 with the thrill of battling zombies and partying with DJs and performing acts to usher in 2017 at Run For Your Lives Malaysia. The event turned Taman Botani Negara into a scene right out of a zombie apocalypse movie.

The idea behind the highly anticipated Run For Your Lives Malaysia is that a zombie apocalypse has plagued the world.  Participants were given the choice to take part as a ‘Survivor’ or a ‘Zombie’. Gameplay is generally simple – the survivors have to outrun the zombies, who have the goal of ‘capturing’ the humans. Besides the chasing zombies, the survivors still have to battle a gruelling obstacle course.

Some participants came in their own make-up and costumes.

The event was set at night for the first time ever. With wit, agility, speed and stamina, participants managed to make their way through The Ladder, crawl under long fences and combat through a dark place filled with smoke, among other obstacles. The event ended with a New Year countdown party with food, drinks, and adrenaline pumping music featuring DJ Nikki and dance crew Nasty G.

Besides experiencing the obstacle run, participants were seen having fun with various other activities held during the carnival-like event which also featured live performances, food trucks, and mini games set to offer fun for the whole family. To add on to the festivities, there were also activities which encouraged participation from the crowd, such as the Best Dressed Zombie Contest, as well as a selfie challenge where the “Survivors” could win an extra life flag when they submit a selfie of them with Ivan of Fly FM.

“This first night version of the event is an overwhelming success. We expected 7,000 participants for the night but were greeted with close to 10,000. They come from different ages, levels and experiences who showed skill and courage during the run. There was a fantastic sense of camaraderie along the course. This is a one of a kind event where the participants get to experience something totally different during New Year’s Eve and we look forward to bringing an even better game of zombie tag and New Year’s countdown to Malaysians for many more years to come,” said Mr. Leong Delon, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Monkey Theory Sdn. Bhd., organisers of Run For Your Lives in Malaysia.
