Portuguese Filipe Azevedo and China’s Zhong Mengying secured top spots at the 25th edition of the NTT Asia Cup Subic Bay International Triathlon held in the Philippines last weekend.
At ACEA Subic Bay in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Azevedo beat his closest rivals Korea’s Min Ho Heo (1:50:55) and Japan’s Takumi Hojo (1:50:59) by hundredths of a second to win with a time of 1:50:50 over the Olympic distance consisting of 1.5-kilometer swim – 40km bike – 10km run.
Meanwhile, in the women’s Elite race, China’s Zhong Mengying (2:01:19) dominated from the swim start to the finishing run with a gap of 2 minutes to win in 2:01:19 over her compatriots Zhang Yi (2:03:44) and Yang Ling (2:04:49).
Philippines’ home favourite Kim Mangrobang finished 8th with 2:07:09. It was still a good finish for the 2017 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist considering the very strong field of competitors.
The race organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) in partnership with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority attracted 800 participants and was supervised by the International Triathlon Union and the Asian Triathlon Confederation.
