Endurance Race Victory Fuels Lewis’ Strategic Push for Tokyo Marathon 2025

Renowned for his extensive experience in long-distance running, Soong Khai Chung (Lewis) has once again proven his mettle. His recent triumph at the Pacer Endurance Challenge 2025 wasn’t just another victory—it was a strategic training milestone as he hones his skills for the upcoming Tokyo Marathon 2025.
A Strategic Training Run
For Lewis, the six-hour endurance event served a dual purpose. Already a seasoned long-distance runner with a storied career, he entered the race with the clear objective of sharpening his pacing strategies and building mileage. “I joined this race because I needed some mileage training for my upcoming Tokyo race,” Lewis explains. This mindset allowed him to push his boundaries without the pressure of redefining his reputation as an elite runner.
Throughout the race, Lewis maintained a disciplined pace—between 5:30 and 5:40 per kilometre—ensuring that he preserved his energy. When fatigue began to set in after 45 kilometres, he strategically slowed to a six-minute pace, showcasing his ability to adapt and maintain endurance over extended distances.

Refined Pacing and Mental Toughness
Even with years of competitive racing behind him, Lewis’ recent performance underscored that success in long-distance running is built on continuous learning and refinement. “I always focus on controlling my pace and staying relaxed,” he shares. His approach during the challenge was methodical: by treating the race as a long training run, he was able to integrate his well-honed techniques with a renewed sense of purpose, preparing his body and mind for the intense race ahead.
When moments of fatigue and doubt emerged, Lewis relied on his unique mental tactics. “When doubt crept in, I’d sing songs in my head or enjoy a quick treat to keep my mind engaged,” he recalls. These personal rituals, honed over years of racing, allowed him to stay focused and maintain the rhythm essential for long-distance endurance.

A Stepping Stone to Tokyo Marathon 2025
While the victory in the Men Veteran category at the endurance challenge is a significant achievement, for Lewis it represents much more—a vital stepping stone towards his goal of excelling in the Tokyo Marathon 2025. “Every race is an opportunity to refine my strategy and build confidence,” he remarks. With the race on his horizon, Lewis’ performance is a testament to his commitment to continuous improvement, ensuring that he remains competitive at the highest levels of long-distance running.
