Beyond the PB: Shahfiq Raof’s Pacer to Pacee Programme for Strategic Running Discipline

(L-R) Pacer to Pacee Edition 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0

The primary challenge for an endurance athlete is often less about physical fatigue and more about the tyranny of the internal dialogue. For Shahfiq Raof, however, the struggle has evolved past personal stamina; it is about engineering a transfer of control. He operates not merely as a runner, but as a strategic mentor who views race execution as an intricate, pre-solved equation. His latest focus, the Pacer to Pacee (P2P) programme, is the mechanism by which he attempts to institutionalise this precise, analytical mindset.

The efficacy of this methodical approach was recently anchored by the success of Pacer to Pacee 3.0 at the Garmin Run Asia Series. Following a focused training cycle, Shahfiq’s two handpicked runners successfully achieved the objective of a Sub 2:00 Half Marathon.

This result was not an accident of good form, but the intended outcome of a structure built to eliminate common psychological and strategic errors. The programme itself emerged from a desire to rectify professional gaps, as Shahfiq admitted: “Previously, I always served as a pacer for events and I felt I had failed if someone followed me but couldn’t finish the race, that’s why I created Pacer to Pacee to give them full support and training plan and make sure they can follow me until the finishing line.”

Shahfiq’s methodology begins with a stringent recruitment process that assesses intent, not just capability. He requires candidates to “share their social media so that I can see how serious they are in running and I also look at their running journey.” This is an investigation into the athlete’s character architecture: are they serious enough to commit to the forthcoming discipline?

Once selected, the core of the P2P philosophy is the wholesale adoption of a non-negotiable strategic framework. The training is comprehensive, including Easy, Base, Strength, Speedwork, and crucially, a mandate for adequate recovery.

The programme’s unique naming structure (Pacer to Pacee) underscores the relationship’s fundamental premise. It is the seasoned expert guiding the aspirational runner, providing a free roadmap to self-mastery. Shahfiq summarises this succinctly: “It means Me (Pacer) will guide my candidate (Pacee) who is willing to follow my program for free to achieve their target in running.”

This guidance is framed as addressing a major systemic deficit in the local scene: the simple lack of structural knowledge. “The problem is many runners don’t know how to start, how to improve, and how to get consistency in the running world,” he observed.

The success of P2P 3.0 provided tangible evidence of strategy absorption. The most critical lesson learned by the pacees was not physical, but intellectual: how to “Create training plan or strategy for every race that has a target” and, critically, the self-discipline to “Follow the strategy during the race day.” They learned the crucial lesson of timing, specifically how to “don’t peak too early.” This reveals the programme’s true value: teaching runners how to think about their training as a multi-stage construction, not a sustained burst of effort.

For Shahfiq, the mentoring process is a continuous audit of his own analytical framework. He acknowledges the complexity of individual variability: “Not everyone can understand others body.” This requires him to temper the scientific rigidity of the plan with the flexibility of human intuition, constantly reminding his charges to prioritise rest and self-awareness: “don’t push over your limit.”

He measures the programme’s success purely by the internal metric of self-improvement: “For sure when they achieve their target means break their previous PB.”

Looking ahead to Pacer to Pacee 4.0, Shahfiq is focused on expanding the reach of this strategic methodology, actively seeking sponsors like Dever Malaysia to maintain the integrity and quality of the support offered. The long-term vision is not about his individual achievements, but about embedding a higher standard of strategic thinking into the Malaysian running community.

The Pacer to Pacee programme ultimately stands as a calculated effort to replace impulsive running with intelligent execution, defined by its crisp, deliberate promise: “We build the plan, you break the PB.”
