Angga Sangputra Leads Runner Tanpa Sempadan to New Heights Ahead of the IJM Duo Highway Challenge

In a world where sports often emphasise competition, Angga Sangputra bin Mhd Safe’i, the captain of Runner Tanpa Sempadan (RTS), champions a different approach. With a mission encapsulated by the phrase, “wherever you go, greet and befriend anyone,” RTS has become a beacon of inclusivity and camaraderie in the running community. This spirit of togetherness will be on full display at the upcoming IJM Duo Highway Challenge on 8 September 2024, where RTS members will participate in various categories including a full marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km, and 1.5km.

Established in 2018, RTS began as a modest WhatsApp group, bringing together a handful of Angga’s running acquaintances. The idea of “Runner Tanpa Sempadan” – “Runner Without Borders” – emerged from Angga’s passion for inclusivity, aiming to break down barriers within the running world. “We wanted a name that reflected our philosophy: no borders between us in this running world,” Angga explained. “I love going places and socialising with everyone, regardless of age or rank.”

RTS members gather regularly for training sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. Weekends see some members tackling long-distance runs ranging from 15km to 21km or venturing onto trails for hill training. This diverse routine caters to various fitness levels and prepares runners for the demands of marathon running. These sessions have been particularly focused as the IJM Duo Highway Challenge approaches, ensuring that RTS members are ready to take on the various race categories.

Beyond physical training, RTS offers a robust support system through mentorship and shared experiences. Members frequently share their personal running journeys and provide valuable tips during group gatherings. This exchange of knowledge ensures that everyone, from novices to seasoned runners, benefits from the collective wisdom of the group.

Understanding that runners come with varying fitness levels, Angga emphasises building endurance and strength over sheer speed. “Run according to your ability and don’t push too hard to avoid injury,” he advises. This inclusive approach ensures that all members, regardless of their starting point, can improve and enjoy the sport safely.

When it comes to marathon preparation, Angga stresses the importance of balanced nutrition and hydration. “Each person’s fitness and stamina are different, so I always remind members to avoid spicy foods a week or two before the marathon and to keep their nutrition and hydration balanced,” he shared. These guidelines are particularly important as RTS members gear up for the varied distances of the IJM Duo Highway Challenge.

Motivation and mental strength are critical components of marathon success. RTS employs frequent looping training, MAF (Maximum Aerobic Function) training, and repetitive hill exercises to keep members engaged and mentally prepared for the challenges of marathon running.

As a community, RTS aspires to support and encourage all members, especially those new to the running world. “We continue to support and help as much as possible, always encouraging and advising those who want to try,” Angga said, highlighting the group’s dedication to fostering a supportive environment.

For those interested in joining RTS, the process is simple. Follow the group on Instagram @runnertanpasempadan and send a direct message to the admin to get the point of contact for each training session. New members are welcome to join the regular training sessions at Tenby International School Meru (Kledang Saiong) in Ipoh every Tuesday night at 8:30 PM.

As the IJM Duo Highway Challenge draws near, Angga Sangputra bin Mhd Safe’i and the RTS community are ready to showcase their spirit of inclusivity and mutual support. Under Angga’s leadership, Runner Tanpa Sempadan continues to grow as a vibrant and inclusive community, proving that in the world of running, camaraderie and mutual support can break down any barrier. Whether participating in the full marathon or the 1.5km fun run, RTS members are set to embody their philosophy of running without borders.
