Active wheelchair tennis players came together to paint towards the “Bag Full of Dreams” initiative by the Wheelchair Tennis Malaysia (WTM). The project aims to raise awareness on sports for the differently-abled in a sustainable manner.
Our Malaysian wheelchair tennis players are strong contenders in Asia and beyond, but they need more support to gain exposure and improve their rankings as they participate in more competitions.
In the current ASEAN Para Games held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Abu Samah Borhan has won his way through to the Men’s Singles Finals and will also partner Ariffahmi Zaquan in the Men’s Doubles Finals against rivals from Thailand.
WTM is working on plans to get the women’s team to Bangkok Open and Malaysia Open this October, in hopes of qualifying for the Asian Games in Indonesia in 2018. They are not funded by the Malaysian Sports Council (MSN) so they need to sell the bags to cover their travel expenses for competitions.
The women have a high chance of qualifying and there are only 3 women tennis players in wheelchairs in Malaysia, but they need more support to participate in more competitions to improve themselves having previously achieved rank 30th in the world. The wheelchairs which they use are specially designed for tennis.
WTM and its supporters dream of a strong, independent and competitive Malaysian sports contingent, representing the nation at international and national events in a variety of differently-abled sports.
WTM is self-supported and will need your support to keep pursuing and work towards flying the Malaysian flag high at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020.
