Competing for a total prize purse of $9,000+, forty-seven finalists from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania in the USA participated Saturday morning in workouts.
The 4th Annual Super SteelFit Championships, a series of intense qualifying functional fitness competitions, culminated with the Finals at Jenkinson’s Inlet Beach in Point Pleasant on June 18.
Utilizing varying aspects of fitness such as pull ups, goblet squats, kettlebell swings, running and more. First-place finishers in Men’s and Women’s RX each received a $2,500 cash prize. Close to 500 spectators were on site Saturday cheering on all the competitors.
For the Women’s RX Division, Annamarie Maruca of CrossFit Hamilton took first place, Danielle Todman of Faith Rx’d followed in second, and Morgan Robinson of CrossFit Nassau finished in third place. For the Men’s RX Division, Nils Dahl of CrossFit Toy Box finished in first place, Kevin Varno of CrossFit Sayreville placed second, and Luke Konen, also of CrossFit Toy Box, took third place.
This is the third year in a row Kevin Varno and Nestor Bedoya took the podium. In 2014, Varno finished in first place and last year finished in third in Men’s RX. Bedoya finished third in 2014 and second place last year in Men’s Scaled.
For the Women’s Scaled Division, Julie Vagnini of CrossFit 13 Stars finished first, Meghan McCooe of CrossFit Toy Box took second place, and Tara Hempel of CrossFit J Town and Nicole DiDomizio of CrossFit Bison both placed third. For the Men’s Scaled Division, Justin Guerriera of CrossFit Sayreville finished first, Brian Rubio, also from CrossFit Sayreville took second place, and Nestor Bedoya of Legacy Athletic Club placed third.
This year is the second year in a row Fabio Rendon and Bart Zimmerman have taken the podium in the Men’s Executive Division. In 2015, Rendon finished in first place, with Zimmerman finishing in second.
Super SteelFit also hosted its first Co-Ed Partner Challenge. The teams of one male and one female competed in three workouts. Andrew McGovern and Brittani Scalia of Team Wolves of Wheelhouse finished in first place. Ben Isabella and Casey Valeri of Team Sayreville finished second and Mark Salgado and Kelly Glasson of Dark Mark and His Pale Friend came in third.
In addition to workouts, a Veterans’ Division competed in a special workout to honour a local fallen hero. Presented by the Warrior Wellness Center, eight veterans competed in honor of SGT John Lyons, age 26, who was killed in action October 26, 2011 in the Ghazni Province, Afghanistan. He was from Seaside Park, NJ.
US Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Greg Delahanty, US Army Staff Sergeant Steven Balazar, Corporal Ed Soto, Lance Corporal Dave Mathis, US Army Sergeant Darius Foster, US Army Staff Sergeant Angelo Margino, Marine Corps Corporal Jonathan Veras, US Army Sergeant Warren Ostin participated in the workout.
This year’s Super SteelFit corporate partners include the New Jersey Army National Guard, North Jersey Orthopaedic Group, Atlantic Stewardship Bank, Capitol Securities, and Jersey Mike’s Subs. In addition, there were representatives from NutraBio, Lifting Culture Apparel, Juice Plus, Power Crunch, Brain GO, Helio Patch, Wheelhouse Nutrition, Faith RX and the Warrior Wellness Center on site at the Finals. Evolve Restorative Therapy and Body Balance serviced the competitors in Athlete Services.
