In a thrilling display at the Shanghai Marathon, Kenyan runner Philimon Kiptoo Kipchumba secured a resounding victory and set new records. Clocking in at 2:05:35, Kipchumba not only claimed the title but also established a new Chinese all-comers’ record.

The 25-year-old athlete slashed nearly two minutes off his personal best and shattered the eight-year-old course record, previously held by compatriot Paul Lonyangata. Expressing gratitude, Kipchumba remarked, “I am so grateful to win the race and to break the course record, and even China’s (all-comers’) record.”

In a competitive men’s race, Kipchumba, alongside Solomon Kirwa Yego and Kenneth Keter, emerged as the leading trio. Surging ahead after the 25km mark, the trio maintained an unyielding pace after the pacer stepped off the course. Kipchumba’s final charge in the last 500m secured the victory.

Simbu clinched second place with a personal best of 2:05:39, followed by Yego in 2:05:42.

In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Siranesh Yirga triumphed, crossing the finish line in 2:21:28. Kenyan veteran Selly Chepyego finished second in 2:21:55, and Bahrain’s Eunice Chumba took third in 2:22:20.
