The mixed 4x400m relay will not be held at the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia, Vietnamese media reported, after the event was contested at each of the last four editions of the Games.
The Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) Executive Committee finalised 473 events across 43 sports for the 34th SEA Games at its third meeting of the 2025-2027 term, held online on 30 October, Bernama reported.
The Games will run from 18 to 29 September 2027 across four clusters: Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Johor and Penang.
Athletics will have 46 medal events but no mixed 4x400m relay, Soha reported, citing Sài Gòn Giải Phóng. Znews and Hà Nội Mới also reported that the event is not on the programme.
Vietnam won the mixed relay at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, where Tạ Ngọc Tưởng, Nguyễn Thị Ngọc, Lê Ngọc Phúc and Nguyễn Thị Hằng set a Games record of 3:15.07.
The previous record, 3:19.29, was set by Thailand when it won the event in Hanoi in May 2022, with Vietnam second.
Vietnam also took gold in 2019 in the Philippines and in 2023 in Phnom Penh.
The mixed 4x400m relay has been on the World Athletics Championships programme since 2019 and made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Znews listed eight sports in which Vietnam had won gold that are not on the 2027 programme: wrestling, rowing, canoeing, traditional boat racing, kickboxing, jujitsu, chess and handball.
Five sports were approved after appeals: padel, dancesport, teqball, ice hockey and kabaddi, Olympic Council of Malaysia deputy president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad said, according to Bernama.
Padel will be held in the Kuala Lumpur cluster and dancesport in Sarawak, said Datuk Abdul Rashid Yaakub, chief executive of the 2027 Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee Secretariat.
