Ekiden Relay Takes Centre Stage at Kelana Jaya Run Club’s 5th Anniversary

In December 2019, a simple Facebook post ignited a spark that would go on to unite the running community in Kelana Jaya. Today, the Kelana Jaya Run Club (KJRC) celebrates five years of fostering friendships, inspiring achievements, and championing the joy of running with its highly anticipated 5th Anniversary Ekiden Race.

Founded by Syed Shahzli b. Syed Muhamad, the club began as a casual weekly run with 11 participants. “I had just started running that year and wanted to connect with others in the neighbourhood,” Syed reflected. What started as a personal journey quickly transformed into a thriving community that now hosts four weekly training sessions and supports runners of all ages and abilities.

To mark this significant milestone, KJRC is inviting runners and spectators to participate in its signature Ekiden Relay Race, a unique team-based format inspired by Japan’s iconic relays. The event promises not just competition but also camaraderie, strategy, and plenty of fun.

The Ekiden Relay features three categories, ensuring something for everyone:

The Ekiden Signature Race, where 80 participants are randomly assigned into teams on the day of the event.

The Ekiden Competitive Race, a showdown for 10 teams from local running clubs, allowing participants to assemble their dream teams.

The Kids Relay, where young runners aged 8–12 get their chance to shine with a fun-filled 100-metre relay.

“The beauty of the Ekiden format is how it brings people together,” Syed shared. “Whether it’s seasoned runners or first-timers, the teamwork and strategy required make it a truly unique experience. Everyone has to think about their strengths and contribute to the team.”

Unlike traditional races, Ekiden’s charm lies in the diversity of distances—ranging from 400 metres to 1.2 kilometres—offering participants a chance to shine in their element. Whether sprinting short distances or pacing a longer leg, every runner’s role is vital to the team’s success.

Beyond the finish line, this event is a celebration of community. Spectators will enjoy the festive atmosphere, complete with snacks, drinks, and the excitement of a lucky draw. More importantly, it’s an opportunity to reflect on five incredible years of shared accomplishments.

KJRC’s journey has been nothing short of inspiring. From topping club challenges to witnessing individual members climb podiums, the group’s achievements are a testament to the power of collaboration and perseverance. “What makes me proudest is seeing how our runners have grown—not just in speed, but in their passion for the sport,” Syed said.

The Ekiden Relay also honours the club’s roots by bringing fresh energy into its traditions. “We introduced the Kids Relay after seeing the enthusiasm of children cheering for their parents in past races,” Syed explained. “It’s wonderful to see the next generation getting involved.”

As KJRC looks forward to the next chapter, exciting developments are already on the horizon. The club recently formalised its status as an organisation, paving the way for new initiatives and opportunities for its members. “This anniversary is just the beginning of an even bigger journey,” Syed hinted.

For now, the focus remains on celebrating the vibrant community that has grown over the past five years. The Ekiden Relay Race is more than just a competition—it’s a testament to the friendships, teamwork, and shared memories that define KJRC.

Whether you’re running, cheering, or simply soaking in the festive spirit, KJRC’s 5th Anniversary promises to be a day to remember, celebrating the extraordinary power of coming together.
