Serena Yang and Chong Xian Hao will fly the Malaysian flag in Triathlon at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018

Malaysia’s Triathlon team will be represented by new talents at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April, with 17-year-old Chong Xian Hao and 26-year-old Serena Yang.

Sarawakian Yang comes from a competitive swimming background and has been competing in Triathlons since 2015. She topped SEA Games bronze medallist Irene Chong to secure the sole Malaysian spot in the women’s event at the Commonwealth Games.

Chong has a list of notable achievements locally and abroad since coming onto the scene at a tender age of 10, and secured his spot with winning the National Championships in November last year. Both Yang and Chong train under team TIME Triathlon which was founded in 2013 as a platform for talented triathletes and grooms our local talents to represent the country in major races.

“It will be a tough challenge for Xian Hao and Serena, especially since they are going up against the Europeans, Australians and the Kiwis, who are professional triathletes. The target for us is to do better than our Asian neighbours and hopefully make the top 20,” said team manager Andy Yeo.

The Triathlon event at the Games will feature the sprint category (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run) instead of the standard triathlon distance (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run). Additionally the lapping rule, which means triathletes who are lapped by the frontrunners are eliminated, is also removed.
