The scene of Triathlon as we know it will be changing this weekend, with the debut of a women’s-only race at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in USA.
To help celebrate this move forward and support Women For Tri, IRONMAN has increased participation totalling over 1,700 women at the start line in Chattanooga at Saturday’s race. The men’s-only race will be held on Sunday, September 10th.

Since 2012, overall female participation numbers increased for IRONMAN events and have held steady since 2015, while the short-distance Triathlon race, IRONMAN 70.3 events have seen an increase of 11.3 percent. Overall, female participation in IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events has nearly doubled since 2012.
Among the inspiring women heading to Chattanooga to represent Women for Tri are:
- Cori James, a tattoo artist in Atlanta, Ga. who suffered from an eating disorder for a number of years.
“When I found tri, I found self-love. I found my passion and I can’t believe I’ve gone from slowly starving myself to death to qualifying for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.”
- Denise Kloeppel, a retired USAF officer Colonel and breast cancer survivor who served 26 years and was deployed after 911.
- Katharine Budd, the UAE-based co founder of NOW Money, a mobile banking app for low-income people, and sponsored by Adventure HQ and BMC.
Weekend events
Women For Tri events at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship include a Women For Tri panel discussion on Friday, September 8 with pros, AG athletes, Women For Tri advisors and ambassadors and a special Women For Tri After-Party following the race from 7:30-9:30PM on Saturday, September 9.
