Back in November, ASICS organised their World Ekiden 2021 event in a virtual format. ToughASIA took part in the 21km team relay with the team members having a go at the ASICS GEL-KINSEI Blast.
What is the ASICS GEL-KINSEI Blast?
Inspired by the GEL-KINSEI iterations from the mid-2000s, the smart and stylish GEL-KINSEI Blast unites Japanese craftsmanship with a modern design for runners who seek top-level running technology.
It features a PEBAX propulsion plate with FF BLAST PLUS cushioning in its midsole. The FF Blast Plus foam creates lightweight cushioning that delivers smooth transitions and propulsive toe-offs, resulting in an ultra soft ride with just the right amount of responsiveness.
By combining both technologies, it helps to redirect the runner’s energy forward to create a faster feel, while enabling a smooth and cushioned landing every step of the way.
Other key features of the shoes are the use of shock absorbent GEL technology cushioning to deliver confidence throughout a run and an engineered knit upper that took inspiration from a samurai’s armour. This helps to provide excellent comfort and support, working alongside the eyelet system that stretches with the midfoot to create a more locked-in feel.
Similarly, the GEL-KINSEI Blast also features visual influence from the history of Japan – with detailing in its midsole mirroring a samurai’s curvaceous katana sword.
What are our thoughts on the ASICS GEL-KINSEI Blast?
First looks – impressive! It has a stylish design with a premium feel, alongside a soft insole that provides the comfort much needed by runners.
However, it does take some getting used to the breathability of this Blast, especially in our hot and humid conditions.
Upon testing it with a 21km run at the ASICS World Ekiden 2021 and the 2021 Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon Virtual Run, the GEL-KINSEI Blast packs a heavy punch against other mid-tier shoes, offering comfort, balance and bounce at a great level. Users would just need to be careful though when running on wet surfaces as the Blast does not seem too grippy.
On the cool factor, it is quite a hands down winner. Worn on the streets of Penang for long walks while on vacation, the Blast performs admirably; good enough to look stylish for Instagram without compromising comfort.
Verdict On the ASICS GEL-KINSEI Blast
At the price of RM749, the ASICS GEL-KINSEI Blast is definitely a bargain for runners that want a pair of shoes for both sports and lifestyle. It provides great comfort especially for those who seek to complete middle to long distance runs..
