Becky Seiner from the Pittsburgh won a monthly sports photo contest by new daily, The Maui News for October 2016. Her winning photo was taken during the Xterra World Championship triathlon on Oct. 23.

Seiner was on holiday in Hawaii and captured an image of Mohamed Lahna, who was born without a right femur and competed in the challenged division, emerging from the water after completing the ocean swim portion of the West Maui event.

The Xterra World Championship takes triathletes on a 1.5km swim, 30km mountain biking and 11km trail run through turbulent, rough and muddy conditions in Maui.

“I was so impressed by the athleticism and persevering attitudes that these racers demonstrated. The water was so rough, large waves and big swells but the racers were not deterred. It was so energizing to photograph this race! … I have been a photographer for 40 years and love to shoot sports. I travel with my gear and love finding new events to shoot,” Seiner said.

The photo contest takes place monthly, and entries are being accepted for November. Images can be submitted on social media by using the hashtag #MNcontest or including @mauinewssports in the caption or comments, or by emailing sportspix@mauinews.com. Winners receive a three-month subscription to The Maui News.
