Many may have heard of the term “runner’s high” – a state where a runner is in a brief, deep relaxing state of euphoria and this can be a common occurrence among runners that truly find running enjoyable.
While not everyone can experience this moment, but once it is found, the sense of extreme joy or delight can help to push a runner for a few more miles with less anxiety and immediately pain after the run.
When ToughASIA reached out to William Lee Han Liang about his running experiences around the world, the delight his face portrayed was exactly what a person with a runner’s high would have experienced.
The 38-year-old runner who achieved a second runner-up in the 2019 Sekinchan Ultra Marathon 2019 50km Men’s Open Category shared his story with ToughASIA.
ToughASIA: When did you start running and what made you interested in running?
William: I started running back in 2009, influenced by my ex-colleague but had only embarked on a more consistent training routine in 2010. Running has helped me to de-stress and I always let my mind run free during the process. It was the perfect ‘me’ time when I ran alone, and the sweating has elevated my mood as well.
ToughASIA: Do you run with a group of friends or join a specific community?
William: Usually, I run alone on weekdays and join group training on weekends. I usually join Speediators for their LSD training.
ToughASIA: Where do you usually train?
WIlliam: I usually train around my condominium and Danau Kota Park while my training with Speediators would be around JKR, Padang Merbok, Publika or Hartamas, depending on the distance.
ToughASIA: What are your best running achievements?
William: I came in third place in the 50km men’s open category in the 2019 Sekinchan Ultra Marathon, but I am also proud of my 2019 Chicago Marathon where I had achieved a personal best of 3:40:29 hrs.
ToughASIA; Have you registered for any races in 2021?
William: A lot of races that I had registered last year were postponed to this year and I am looking forward to them. These include the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon, Kuching Marathon, Melaka Marathon, Negeri Sembilan Marathon, and Berlin Marathon.
ToughASIA: Can you tell us your warm up routine?
William: My warm up is approximately 5 to 10 minutes long, made up mainly of dynamic stretching. This includes the hamstring and calf stretches, quad stretch, side squat, walking lunges, side neck stretch, shoulder stretch, standing toe touches and kneeling hip flexor. Each exercise is approximately 10 to 20 seconds with a repetition on the opposite side of the body. Warm down routine would be the same as well.
ToughASIA: Do you incorporate any other exercises into your routine?
William: Sometimes, I will also incorporate planks or squat routines into my post-workout routine.
ToughASIA: Recently, you have been consuming some JoyMix Hello-Bong and JoyMix Collagen. How have these products helped with your runs?
William: It has basically turned into my regular morning routine to consume the JoyMix Hello-Bong and JoyMix Collagen because the effects have been amazing.
It has helped to minimise the inflammation of my joints and muscle pain especially after a long run. But to my surprise, it has also smoothen my skin especially with the combination of collagen and the vitamin C in the Hello-Bong sachet.
I went for a 3-day, 2-night hiking trip in Hulu Terengganu last year and had an ulcer in my mouth. After using Hello-Bong for a few days, the ulcer recovered. The ulcer inflammation subsided tremendously and I am really impressed with the combination of both products.
ToughASIA: Will you recommend the JoyMix Hello-Bong and JoyMix Collagen to your friends and family?
William: I do hope that more people will get to know the amazing products by JoyMix. I do believe that they have the JoyMix Awake and JoyMix Beetroot as well which I believe will be a great pairing to the JoyMix Hello-Bong and JoyMix Collagen to boost my running performance.
