What does it take to win the CrossFit Games Open with five workouts held over five weeks? CrossFit Director Dave Castro dished out gruelling workouts to challenge even the crème de la crème.

In the last of the five workouts in 17.5, reigning Fittest Woman on Earth, Katrin Davidsdottir faced off against second runner-up, Sara Sigmundsdottir. You could already feel the competitiveness, the audience was cheering and all riled up, making it feel like the finals of the CrossFit Games.

Although Sigmundsdottir didn’t win a single workout, consistency remained the key for her to reap the title at the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games Open. With only one finish outside of the top 10 (17.2), Sigmundsdottir ends the Open with a 4-point lead over second-place Kari Pearce.

After switching regions—twice—and changing her training plan, Sigmundsdottir is on a quest to earn the title of Fittest Woman on Earth after standing on the podium twice with a bronze medal.

It doesn’t matter how you start, but how you finish. Reigning Fittest Man on Earth, Mathew Fraser staged a come back after trailing in the first two workouts of five to win the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games Open.

After starting the Open season with a 20th- and 15th-place finish on 17.1 and 17.2, Fraser came back to nab a third and two firsts in the last three workouts. Poised to be the second man in history to repeat as Fittest on Earth, Fraser will no doubt ride this momentum right into the East Regional where he’ll presumably earn his third consecutive trip to the CrossFit Games.

Among the more than 380,000 Open competitors lie the Fittest Man and Woman on Earth. The best of the Open will move on to prove their fitness at the Regional level at one of CrossFit’s eight worldwide Regional competitions starting in May.
