Athletes from across 15 countries gathered at this coastal haven to take part in a test of strength and resilience beneath the scorching Malaysian sun. Against the backdrop of Selangor’s stunning natural beauty, the event was more than just a race; it was a showcase of the indomitable human spirit and camaraderie.
Olympic Distance – Men: Khairil Claims the Throne
In the highly anticipated men’s Olympic Distance category, all eyes were on Muhammad Khairil, a name synonymous with duathlon excellence. Khairil’s presence wasn’t merely to compete; it was to claim his throne after coming in fifth last year. After enduring a gruelling 10km run, a punishing 40km bike ride, and a final 5km sprint, he triumphantly crossed the finish line in 01:55:10, proving that his spirit was unbreakable.
Khairil shared his thoughts on the event, saying, “My experience at the Selangor Duathlon 2023 was exhilarating. It motivated me to compete healthily with great athletes. This event was special as it marked my return to duathlon after recovering from a motorcycle accident-related injury.”
Olympic Distance – Women: Maryati’s Dominance Shines
Mohd Maryati, a perennial favourite in the Olympic Distance Women’s category, showcased her dominance with an impressive time of 02:26:44. Despite a busy work schedule and limited training, Maryati’s determination propelled her to the top of the field.
Reflecting on her victory, Maryati stated, “This was my fourth duathlon participation and my second in the Selangor Duathlon competition since 2022, where I secured the 2nd place. Overall, the event was great, but I had limited training due to my busy work schedule.”
Sprint Distance – Men: Ziq vs. Yap – Clash of Titans
In the Sprint Distance Men’s race, a remarkable face-off unfolded as Malaysia’s national athlete, Ziq Junaidy, clashed with the sensational 17-year-old newcomer, Yap Qi Yi, who burst onto the duathlon scene with an extraordinary performance. While Ziq, an experienced competitor, demonstrated his skill with a finishing time of 01:00:51, it was the young prodigy, Yap Qi Yi, who seized the spotlight by crossing the finish line in a blazing 00:59:32, leaving an indelible mark on the duathlon arena.
Ziq Junaidy shared his experience, saying, “I thoroughly enjoyed the event and the environment. The morning atmosphere added to the excitement. I hope in the future, we can start the sprint events at 7 am to enjoy a misty ambiance.”
“My body felt fatigued because I had recently returned from PTO Singapore the week before Selangor Duathlon. Additionally, I experienced some gastric issues the day before the race, which caused me to miss the race briefing. This, in turn, led to me missing a crucial junction while on the bike course. However, despite these challenges, I know that I have given my all for the race.”
Yap Qi Yi, a relative newcomer to duathlons and aged only 17, shared his perspective, “I’m thrilled with my second duathlon race, especially competing alongside Malaysia’s top athletes. Despite a shaky start during T2, I regrouped and credited my coaches for my performance, particularly in transitions and the final run. Overtaking Ziq Junaidy during the bike leg was unexpected, but staying focused on my coach’s power targets paid off. Moving forward, I’ll work on surges and biking techniques to respond to attacks and save energy for the final run.”
“In the race, my main challenge was a rushed transition at T2, but my family and supporters helped me stay calm and finish strong. I’m particularly pleased with how well I handled transitions in T1 and the final run, thanks to dedicated training. My focus now is on mastering surges and refining my biking technique for improved race performance.”
