Ironman 70.3 Busselton’s swim was cut short after a shark sighted off the coast of Western Australia last weekend. Australia is known as one of the world’s most shark-infested area.
Observers in a helicopter spotted a shark, which led to Surf Life Saving Western Australia calling off the swim leg and pulling about 100 swimmers in the middle of their 1.9km swim out of the water. They continued on with the bike and run competitions. Relay teams only competed in a duathlon instead, in the bike-run leg only.
The professional triathletes had already completed their swim and their race was not affected. Dan Wilson (AUS) edged out three-time Ironman world champion Craig Alexander (AUS) for the men’s win, and Katey Gibb (AUS) narrowly beat Jacqueline Thistleton (AUS) for the women’s top spot.
