Healthy Joints Are The Key to A Faster and Longer Run

Running is a great workout that brings ample joy to many of us, but the wonderful experience could shatter especially with pains on the knee and ankle due to repetitive loads on the joints.

In February 2020, Runner’s World Magazine published an article mentioning that an average person running an 8-minute mile (~1.6km) requires over 1,400 steps per mile. The number increases to 1,700 steps per mile if a runner runs a 10-minute mile, which translates to 1,700 times an athlete loads their joints in a single mile of run.

While some may argue that their joints are healthy, it is always better to prevent injuries that can happen due to poor posture or techniques. Therefore, consuming supplements to maintain healthy joints can be a better alternative than ultimately giving up running altogether.

JoyMix Enterprise recently released its new product Hello-Bong that is formulated to improve joint health. Made from Hallabong, a special seedless species of orange cultivated primarily on Jeju island in South Korea, it is packed with vitamin C that serves a role as a cofactor in collagen synthesis, the main protein in joint tissue and bone.

Moreover, each Hello-Bong sachet is also mixed with turmeric, which has proven to reduce Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) that includes pain, morning stiffness, walking time and joint swelling. Turmeric is also known to provide additional benefits including immunity boosting and the fighting of inflammation naturally.

Trail runner Mohamed Heikal tested the newly launched product and saw an improvement towards his joint recovery as he accidentally injured his ankle in one of his trail run training prior to this review.

ToughASIA: What kind of workouts do you do and how often?
Heikal: I love trail running and I do it regularly over the weekends. It would normally be a 2 to 3-hour session with a distance of between 10-17 kilometers, and it may also include some high intensity sessions.

ToughASIA: Trail running can put a lot of pressure on a runner’s joint, especially on the knee and ankle. Do you have any similar problems?
Heikal: It does and to make things worse, I am a coffee lover in which caffeine is notoriously known to weaken bones and exacerbate joint pain as it leaches calcium from our bones. But what is more common is ankle injury.

Coincidentally, I sprained my ankle right before I started reviewing Hello-Bong, which makes it the perfect time to test the product.

ToughASIA: After a few weeks of trial consuming Hello-Bong, how has that helped with your ankle injury’s recovery process?
I have been surprised with the progress of recovery as it was faster than usual. I was able to get back on track for my recovery training just days after consumption.

Not sure if this is a placebo effect, but it did help with the recovery and I will continue to consume it because to me, it works.

ToughASIA: How do you normally consume Hello-Bong?
Heikal: Normally, I would consume a sachet during and post-workout respectively. It is in a powdered form so it is easy to consume as it dissolves quickly in the mouth and it tastes good. My recommendation is to consume it with ice water post-workout as it feels great to have a refreshing drink after a good sweat.

Jeffrey Chin, owner of JoyMix also added that to enjoy the full benefit of Hello-Bong, athletes should consume Hello-Bong together with pure collagen. “Athletes with joint pain can add some pure collagen to their breakfast drink and have a sachet of Hello-Bong after their breakfast”.
