Hazarul Faskah: From Obese to 2019 IRONMAN All World Athlete
2013 was a turning point for Hazarul Faskah bin Harun. Obese and unfit, he decided he had enough of the lifestyle that he led, and wanted to make the change. It only took a group of friends whom invited him to run, subsequently he got hooked and the rest is history.
Since then, Hazarul has channelled his adrenaline for “swim, bike, run” to countless running and triathlon races, including completing 3 IRONMAN Malaysia races. In 2019, he achieved what other fellow weekend warriors would be envious of, the IRONMAN All World Athlete Bronze status.
Born in Kuala Terengganu, Hazarul was brought up in KL but spent most of his teenage years in a boarding school in Malacca. Working in the IT industry, he typically prefers to run on his own, at his own pace, from his doorsteps in Ipoh, Perak and Bukit Antarabangsa, Selangor.
Hazarul shared his favourite routes with us in Perak and Selangor.
1. Tambun, Perak
2. Stadium Ipoh, Perak
3. Bukit Antarabangsa, Selangor (for more elevation)
His warm up routine includes 10 lunges, 10 squats, 10 step ups followed by 15 mins easy run with running drills; high knee, A skip, butt kick, straight leg bound and side steps. After his runs, Hazarul would do 3-4 sets of 10 push ups, 10 back squats, 10 deadlifts, 10 Russian twists or crunches and 10 dumbbell rows.
Hazarul loves the tangy taste of the Hello-Bong. He finds it effective as a post-workout nutrition, and feels that it helps him recover.
He said “Normally my legs will feel tight the next day due to DOMS. But now I feel less stress especially on my calf after each run”.
Hopefully, when races resume after the CMCO ends, Hazarul would be able to race the IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast and KLSCM half marathon, which he has registered. And of course, he looks forward to continuing his journey at IRONMAN Malaysia.
