Double Olympic Triathlon champion Alistair Brownlee was unstoppable en route to defending his title at the 2017 Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Leeds last weekend.

Brownlee’s indomitable spirit kept both him and brother Jonathan in the lead in the second half of the run after a 1.5km swim and 40km on the bike. The chase pack were closing in at one point, and Jonny said ‘let’s call it a day now and give up’, and but Alistair kept working harder and stretched out their lead further.

Alistair said, “No, let’s keep working because they’ve still got to catch us at the end of the day and the time started going out. We had to work a lot harder in the first 2 or 3 laps in the city centre circuit than we’ve had to work before and that tired us out quite a bit.”

Despite training for middle distance in Triathlon this year, Alistair still showed he’s still sharp on the ITU course to take the top spot. Younger brother Jonathan earned the silver medal and allowed the repeat of the Brownlees going 1-2 in the WTS Leeds event for another year. Spain’s Fernando Alarza completed the podium and is currently standing at the top of the leaderboard for the WTS rankings.

The success for Great Britain continued however when Tom Bishop and Adam Bowden finished in fourth and fifth place, signifying that the nation had four men in the top five on home soil, a feat that has never happened in either the men’s or women’s races in the history of the WTS.
