Port Elizabeth police have confirmed two competitors who took part in the 2019 Standard Bank Ironman African Championship have died.
According to a statement by IRONMAN South Africa, both athletes required help during the 1.6km swimming leg of the race and were transported to a nearby hospital where they were treated.
Unfortunately, both didn’t survive. It’s believed one of the men may have suffered a heart attack and another from what appeared to be convulsions.
In a statement, IRONMAN conveyed their condolences and said they will work with local authorities to gather more details and will continue to do everything possible to provide a safe environment for their athletes.
Errata: The swim was shortened to 1.6km due to the choppy conditions.
