Writer Wilson Liew (right) loves racing Triathlons with son, Edward

Racing as father and son, brings a whole different dimension to Powerman Malaysia. Everyone in the family is usually busy with their own things – my son, Edward at school, while I am away at work during the weekdays.

With Triathlon as our father-son common interest, we get to train together over the weekends (along with Team M3X) working towards similar goals. Furthermore, we get to spend quality time together, keep fit and it’s great for family bonding.

We’ve been racing Powerman Malaysia and other Triathlons together, for the past few years and we’re still loving it!  Seeing how competitive the kids are has been a great motivation for me to keep doing this.

Edward Liew aced his category 11-12 years in PowerKids Malaysia 2019.

The Liew family of Triathletes – a family that races together, stays together.

Over the last few years, we’ve made effort to ‘drop everything’ and be present at events in supporting each other.

At the Powerman Asian Duathlon Championships 2019, Edward raced the PowerKids on Saturday while I raced the Short distance on Sunday. Everyone in the family turned up for both days. My eldest daughter, Angie didn’t get to race this time as there’s no category to match her age group, so she turned ‘photographer’ for both days. My wife, Elizabeth as usual plays the ‘team manager’ role in making sure everyone knows what to do.

On Race Day, this is my first time racing in the short distance (Run 5km – Bike 30km – Run 5km)  category as I would usually go for the longer distance in the Classic Category. Overall, I’d say I’m pretty happy with the results as I haven’t had the chance to train much for the past 2.5 months due to a surgery on my hand. I managed to achieve the timing as predicted by Edward, which is to complete within 2 hours 20min.
